The reefs of Diamonds Thudufushi are home to several marine turtles which you can encounter both snorkelling and diving. Our marine biologists will provide all the information you need to discover and admire these great creatures, plus a few tips on how to interact with them!

If you manage to take a picture of the turtle during an encounter, our marine biologist may be able to tell you who you just met. Individual turtles can be identified using their distinctive marks on the carapace and patterns in their face. Therefore, we know the different individuals, like “Coraline” or “Zabaione” that are frequently spotted on our reef. Should you encounter a new individual, you can choose the name and we will issue you a certificate of appreciation. This is a valuable contribution to our work as this information gained through non-invasive photo identification helps us to better understand the turtle populations in the Maldives.
Our marine biologists actively collaborate and share data with one of the biggest research and awareness projects in the Maldives: The Olive Ridley Project. We also collaborate on turtle rescues, should we find a turtle that needs medical attention after entanglement in a ghost net. Ask our team about some of the successful rescues we had on Thudufushi, thanks to our partnership with the Olive Ridley Project and Marine Savers.
Finally, Diamonds Thudufushi is sometimes visited by female green turtles Chelonia mydas, that nest on our beach. Watching, dozens of little turtles hatch from their nest and make their way into the big ocean is a truly magical experience.
